As the Heritable Innovation Trust team prepares the final Trust document for 2010, it is useful to gain some geographical context for where one new Trust is originating. In the South Gobi region, the camel herder community is located a few hours drive south from Dalanzadgad and the tree planting operation is located about 15 kilometers west of Dalanzadgad. As one can see from the map below, the area is rich in commodity mineral resources.

More than 72 hours have gone by and our six interns have been working day and night to create the Heritable Innovation Trust 2010, Mongolia and Papua New Guinea. It has been a grueling process but from their first draft, they appear to have a lot of great content. One Trust Item that is featured is the Traditional Sling (similar to an English Sling-Shot Device) of Papua New Guinea, which was demonstrated to them in Alakasam. The traditional shorter sling is used by the Qaqet community of Papua New Guinea, traditionally for warfare because it provides the user great accuracy.

On our trip to the South Gobi, the M-CAM team was fortunate to meet a very special family. Batbayar ("Baidaa") & Jazei (“Jagaa") became our guides, friends, and partners during the trip. Baidaa and Jagaa's company, Gobyn Undur (Mongolian for 'Gobi Highest') has started development of a large tree farm approximately 15 kilometers from Dalanzadgad, Mongolia. This farm is situated on a flat piece of land which has been cleared of rocks. The farm has many surface water resources nearby.

Upon arrival in the South Gobi, we were warmly greeted by the staff of Tuvshin Shankhat LLC. Mrs. Onoo Purev, the proprietor of Gobi Oasis about 10km west of Dalanzadgad (DZ, Mongolia} was our host and offered us an in-depth conversation of how the company came about. Originally, the business started with Onoo’s father. Starting out as a construction engineer, in 1990 at the start of the market economy in Mongolia, Mr. Purev left the Construction division of government and partnered with four people to start a tourism business.

Earlier in the week, the M-CAM and MNBIF teams arrived at the Gurvan Saikhan Airport in Dalanzadgad, Mongolia. I'd continue writing the post, but I have to ponder on the above sentence for a minute. Holy cow! As we departed the plane, a warm and dusty Gobi wind brushed against us. We cleared security, hopped in a van and drove a few miles to the Tuvshin Shankhat gir (English - yurt) complex. A delightful staff greeted us and helped us unpack in what turned out to be top-of-the-line accommodations.
