Elspeth Missel

“Like water, be gentle and strong. Be gentle enough to follow the natural paths of the earth, and strong enough to rise up and reshape the world.” -Elizabeth Berg

My name is Elspeth Missel, and I am a member of the class of 2012 at the University of Virginia. I am majoring in Foreign Affairs, with specific interest in the relationship between economics and politics in developing regions. I am also pursuing a minor in Studio Art. Having grown up in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, I have a passion for the outdoors and for preserving natural beauty. I am a member of UVa’s varsity Women’s Rowing team. As an active individual, I am always up for adventure and enjoy hiking, biking, camping, and kayaking. I have had the opportunity to travel internationally, though Papua New Guinea will be my first time exploring the Western Pacific. Once we there, I am looking forward to interacting with the native communities of East New Britain and furthering my knowledge of the economic and ecological issues relevant to the region.
